Safe Ice Dam Tips for Raleigh, Cary, Apex NC Homes – Wait for the Thaw
February 2026 | Artisan Quality Roofing – Local Ice Dam Help & Roof Inspections in the Triangle
We’re getting a surge of calls right now about ice dams in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Durham, and across the Triangle.
The recent snow, ice glaze, and freeze-thaw cycles are creating classic conditions, and those long icicles hanging
from eaves are a clear sign of trouble.
We can’t safely perform full professional ice dam removal or major repairs while the ice is still solid.
Chipping, hammering, steam, or heavy tools on frozen ice almost always damages shingles, underlayment, or gutters —
and climbing on icy roofs is extremely dangerous.
Once the ice melts (usually with the next warm spell or steady above-freezing temps), we can safely remove the dam,
inspect for leaks or damage, and plan long-term fixes like attic sealing, insulation upgrades, and ventilation
improvements. In the meantime, here’s what homeowners can do safely.
Safe, Low-Risk Ways to Help Melt Ice Dams (DIY Only)
- Use roof-safe melt (calcium chloride-based):
Buy roof melt pellets or calcium chloride ice melt (NOT rock salt — it corrodes shingles, gutters, nails, and kills plants).
Fill pantyhose or tube socks with granules, tie off the ends, and lay them perpendicular across the ice dam so they
hang slightly over the edge. This melts channels for water to drain safely. - Sprinkle lightly from the ground:
Toss small amounts of roof melt onto the dam using a roof rake or long pole if needed.
Use sparingly to avoid uneven melting. - Rake snow off lower roof edges:
From the ground only, clear snow from the bottom 3–5 feet of roof to reduce meltwater feeding the dam.
Never climb ladders or walk on icy roofs.
Important safety warnings:
- Never chip, hammer, or chop ice — this damages shingles and risks injury.
- Avoid rock salt or chemical de-icers not labeled roof-safe.
- Do not use heat guns, torches, or open flames near the roof.
These steps are temporary and only buy time until thaw — they do not fix the root cause,
which is usually poor attic insulation or ventilation.
