For every roof, there is roof decking. This is the very bottom layer of your roofing system. Typically, it is comprised of many 7/16 OSB sheathing boards nailed into the rafter system of the roof. Every roofing contractor should replace rotted or damaged boards when they replace your roof. Unfortunately, many don’t.
3-tab shingles became the standard roofing material in the 1950s. They are single strips of shingles with a single layer of asphalt. They have a flat appearance and have almost a 2-D brick pattern when you see them on a full roof. They got their name from how the shingle pieces are cut into three tabs per shingle (see below).

On a hot sunny day, the temperatures of a traditional roof can be more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the outside temperature! On some days, you could even fry an egg on your roof. However, we don’t recommend it. It doesn’t taste good.
