Pesky Bats! How to Get Rid of Bats in Your Attic

Bats in your attic space - close up of a bat hanging upside down

Feeling like you’re not alone in your home? You may not be. While we’re not referring to ghosts or goblins, we ARE alluding to a much worse horror story in the making: BATS. Do you have bats in your attic?

Bats in Your Attic

Cute as they are (to some people,…you might already think they’re gross), bats cause seriously damage to your roofing system and attic space.

Guano, or bat droppings, look like mice droppings. However, bats deposit in piles. This can lead to mold and fungus growth with potential for wood rot in your roof or attic.

Furthermore, if bats find small spaces to crawl through (gable vents, ridge vents, soffits, etc.), they can warp and damage those areas of your home.

Bats are extremely beneficial to the environment, but they can carry diseases and additional pests that are harmful to humans. Keep an eye on possible entry points such as dormers, vents, ridge caps, or gaps in fascia and roof trim; if you notice dark staining near these areas, bats could be the culprit.

Squirrels in Your Attic

Squirrels, while their droppings might not be as harmful, are notoriously destructive. They crawl through your gutters and soffits and build nests.

Not only that, they’ll also chew through fascia, siding, and soffits to enter through your attic. In rare instances, they may even use roof vents to chew through and enter your attic space.

If you suspect these (or any other) critters in your home, try to take care of the issue before the critters cause too much damage.

How Do You Get Rid of Squirrels & Bats in Your Attic?

Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as setting a trap in the attic and letting the animals loose. For one, it’s difficult to know when you’ve captured all the critters. Secondly, you’d have to drive an extremely far distance to release the animals. Otherwise, they’ll easily find their way back to their nest. Lastly, the animals (bats in particular) could carry harmful diseases and should be handled with caution. We recommend contacting a wildlife expert for appropriate removal.

  1. Contact a local wildlife service like Urban Wildlife for safe removal.
  2. Have the wildlife service identify the animals’ access points & get their recommendations.
  3. Contact a licensed contractor for an inspection and repairs to close access points and repair any damaged areas.

Do not try to remove the critters yourself. Effective removal is difficult and potentially dangerous.
